Part 1 · Why chia can bloat
The numbers

Six reasons it can bloat
Too much, too fast
Jumping from a low-fibre diet to lots of chia in one go can mean wind and bloating.
Dry chia
Dry seeds soak up liquid, many times their own weight. Soak first, so it happens in the glass.
Too little water
Fibre works best with fluid. Sip water through the day as you add more fibre.
Stacked fibre
Chia plus oats plus beans plus bran in one day adds up fast. Change one thing at a time.
Gut bacteria
Gut bacteria ferment some fibre, which makes gas. It often eases as your gut adjusts.
IBS or a sensitive gut
Some guts react to fermentable fibre. Ask your GP or a dietitian what suits you.

Chia is a food, not a medicine. Bloating that won't settle needs your GP, not a spoon.
Part 2 · Making it count
Fix the fibre gap
Most UK adults eat about 20g of fibre a day against a 30g target, so a big jump is a real change for your gut. A tablespoon of chia gives about 4g, roughly a seventh of the target. Helpful, but build up slowly.
Three myths, and the honest bit
It's the chia?
Often it's the amount or the speed, not the seed. Big, dry or sudden doses are the usual culprits.
Dry is fine?
Dry chia swells fast. A case report describes it blocking the food pipe, so soak it first.
More is better?
Not at first. Start with 1 teaspoon of soaked chia and build slowly. A big jump just means more wind.
How to start, gently
Soak 1 tablespoon of chia in 150ml liquid for 10 minutes. Stir well, then eat.
Start with 1 teaspoon a day and add a little every few days. Drink water through the day.
Stir it into foods you already eat, like porridge, yoghurt or a smoothie.
Bloating that won't settle, or comes with tummy pain, blood in your poo or weight loss you can't explain? See your GP. Pregnant or on medication? Check with your GP first.
